Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls

In italian : Basilica di San Paolo fuori le murà

The basilica was founded in the place of an ancient church built over the tomb of the Apostle Paul, by the Emperor Theodosius, with a five nave design.

Dating back to the fourth-fifth century, St. Paul Outside the Walls (i.e, outside the walls of the city of Rome, the Aurelian Wall), was destroyed in 1823 by fire.Since then she was faithfully reconstructed.
However, its rich and elegant cloister of the thirteenth, performed by Cosmatesque masters has survived. There the remains of the ancient basilica and sarcophagi are deposited.

The interior is grand and bright, with its main nave is supported by 80 columns.
The panels that cover the walls describe dozens of scenes from the Gospels. A long frieze extends in height, wrapping around the interior. It is formed by 265 medallions representing all the popes since St. Peter.

Under the arch, the ancient mosaic of the fifth century devoted to the Apocalypse has been restored.
