    Basilica of St. John Lateran

Abside, Basilica of St. John Lateran

In italian : Basilica San Giovanni in Laterano

Constantine raised the first basilica in around 320. This is the most ancient of churches, the mother of them all that inspired and still inspires Christian buildings.

St. John Lateran is the cathedral of Rome, the seat of the Bishop of Rome whom is is the Pope himself, St. Peter being the Vatican’s church.

The church was rebuilt and embellished many times in history, due to earthquakes, looting and fires. In its original version, it has only kept the same proportions and much of the baptistery.
Rebuilt by Nicolas IV in the late thirteenth century, it burned down shortly after, in 1308. Then rebuilt and decorated by Giotto, fire struck it once again in 1360.

In the middle of the seventeenth century, Innocent X entrusted Francesco Borromini with its reconstruction, including beautifying the interior with twelve niches hosting large statues of the apostles. The facade dates from 1734, the project was entrusted to the Florentine Alessandro Galilei who won a dubious contest, convened by Clement XII, Florentine too.
The apse and mosaics were fully renovated in the late 19th century.

The interior is 130 meters long. Various relics related to Christ are preserved there.
A small part of the fresco by Giotto remains, representing Bonifacio VIII at the Jubilee of 1300.

It includes a beautiful cloister and baptistery close to the Lateran Basilica, which has retained beautiful early Christian remains.
On the Lateran Square, stands a high Egyptian obelisk of the fifteenth century BC, from Karnak. With its 36 meters in height, is the biggest Egyptian obelisks.
